Painting
Robert Merrill's artistic talents were not limited to singing. When he wasn’t doing Yoga or enjoying a neighborhood walk, he loved to paint. He worked primarily with oil paint and captured landscapes of the home he loved and lived in for over 50 years. Clowns were a subject he returned to many times. Perhaps the clown paintings reflect operatic roles such as Pagliacci or the comic character of Figaro. The clown paintings also speak to the complicated emotions behind performance at large. His painting style is playful and childlike, with a clear enjoyment of the process of painting itself.
